John Quirk
Mr. Quirk received his law degree in 1979 from Loyola University, Los Angeles, and has been a partner in Bright and Brown since 1986. Mr. Quirk has represented both mineral lessees and lessors in their negotiation and performance of oil and gas leases and other agreements unique to the exploration and development phases of the oil and gas industry. He is considered one of the State's leading practitioners in the area of oil and gas title, and in that regard has represented title companies in connection with mineral title issues and disputes, and has represented landowner developers in connection with their acquisition and development of currently or previously productive oil and gas properties for other uses.
Mr. Quirk is a frequent speaker to oil and gas industry gatherings. For recent examples, he spoke last year to the participants in the 25th Annual West Coast Land Institute on the topic "The Rule Against Perpetuities and Fee Simple vs. Surface Title: The Most Painfully Boring Experience of Your Life." In 1996, he spoke to the 14th Annual West Coast Institute on the topic "Preferential Purchase Rights, Perpetuities, and Marketable Record Title." He presented a paper on the subject "Exercising Your Surface Entry Rights; Use Them or Loose Them?" to the 16th Annual West Coast Institute, spoke at the 17th Annual West Coast Institute to provide an "Update on California Oil & Gas Law," and spoke to the 18th Annual West Coast Institute concerning "Dealing with Co-Tenancy Interests: Leasing and Encumbering Without the Consent of All Co-Tenants." He spoke in 2000 to the Annual Meeting of the California Independent Petroleum Association ("CIPA") concerning the California Environmental Quality Act ("CEQA"), and spoke during the prior year to CIPA's 23rd Annual Meeting on the subject of "Positive Partnerships between Oil & Gas Lessors & Lessees." He addressed an annual convention of the National Association of Lease and Title Analysts concerning "An Overview of California Oil & Gas Law, Leasing and Division Order Practice."
